Seamless Steel Tube ASTM A106 Grade B

The seamless steel tube has many uses and covers a wide range of pressures and temperatures depending on the fittings, flanges, valves and of course the wall thickness of the tube. The range of wall thicknesses is denoted in schedules, for instance, ASTM A106 hot-finished seamless steel tube schedule 40 in size 150mm nominal bore has a 7.11mm wall. For each schedule available whether 40, 80 or Schedule 160 there are varying maximum pressures depending on the temperature of the medium being carried, this table can also be found on the same page as the details on wall thickness. Seamless Steel Tube a Short History

Seamless steel tube has been manufactured for over a century, looking back at the history of standards we recognise it appears that the first standard was to API 5L First Edition 1928, this pipe standard was published by the American Petroleum Institute which came into being in 1924 to standardise materials and specifications for the oil and gas industry in the United States. For a fuller history of this organisation please follow the highlighted link to visit their Website’s history page, their history can be traced back to WW1 when they worked with the United States Congress to standardise specifications to aid in the war effort. Other similar standards are covered under ANSI B63.10-1936; the current edition of this comes under ASME/ANSI B36.10-2004, reaffirmed in 2010. The first seamless British Standard tube was BS 53:1913; this was cold drawn weld-less boiler tube for use on steam locomotives. The equivalent to the modern-day seamless steel tube was BS3601:1962 which has now been superseded by BS EN 10216-1:2013.
