Flanges EN 1092-1:2013 3.1b Certified

We have noted that some of our competitors are now offering what we see as an inferior option to what we supply to reduce prices. We feel it is our obligation to our customer base to ensure that they receive the best possible quality product; and of course, that the material test certification is satisfactory.

When putting together pressure systems using flanges, the material quality can often be paramount, especially to those welding the product. Now we offer flanges EN 1092-1 in S235JR material, these flanges are available with 3.1b test certificates which apply to that flange. In other words, the flange supplied is completely traceable and the test cert applies only to that batch; as each is stamped with a unique batch number.

Now if you purchase a flange that is only marginally cheaper from one of our close competitors, you are likely to receive flanges EN 1092-1 that only have 2.2 certification. A 2.2 certificate is a statement of compliance based on non-specific inspections

Therefore, an EN 1092-1 flange with 2.2 certification does not offer the traceability that is assured with 3.1b test certification; but this does reduce the cost price significantly. Savings that of course can be passed to a customer, but what happens if the flange isn’t of the traceable quality expected by the end user?

If they come back to you later and request certification that offers traceability; and the answer from your supplier is sorry we cannot offer that. At this point the end-user has two choices, they can accept the fact that the flange conforms to the pressure and temperature stated. Or they can reject the entire installation because traceability is not available.

In an atmosphere of endless requirements by Consultants and end users for traceability and health and safety requirements. The likely path is they will reject the installation, even though in truth nothing is likely to go wrong. If there is not a clear route of traceable product, rightly or wrongly the quality of the work done could be brought into question.

For this reason, we inform customers of situations like this, in the past flanges EN 1092-1 3.1b  were scarcer; and because we could not always offer them, we did lose orders.

Flanges EN 1092-1 S235JR Material

Our present supply of flanges EN 1092-1 are all manufactured in S235JR material and are 3.1b certified, therefore traceable. Quality assurance is at the heart of what we offer here at Besseges (Valves, Tubes & Fittings) Ltd and will remain so. In the recent discussions we have had with a very small amount of our customers the price difference between our 3.1b flanges and the 2.2 flanges has been marginal. If I was the end user and the difference was so small I would choose quality over price. But that is a decision for each business and the cost savings they are looking for to win an installation contract.

From a contractor’s perspective though considering the time it takes to complete a welded installation, that marginal difference could be less than 11p per flange. Peace of mind when completing an installation that is hugely important to the end user is surely not worth such a small amount of money.

It is worth also considering that these same flanges are used on industrial gas installations, where quality and traceable products are key.
