Butt Weld Fittings BS EN 10253 – What Would You Like To Know?
This product range, butt weld fitting BS EN 10253 is what was once described as BS1965 welding fittings to suit British pipe dimensions which in some sizes were and still are different to the ASME/ANSI pipe dimensions. For pipeline installations in the United Kingdom and across what was once described as the British Empire, British Standards were the benchmark to be followed. Across the World in the modern day, things have changed, we are past the golden age of the Industrial Revolution where Britain once led the World, although the British Standards Institute is still one of the World’s leading authorities on national and international quality assurance.
Butt weld fittings to BS EN 10253 are used on some pipeline installations and the earliest mention as far as we are aware of butt weld fittings of this type was BS 1965:1953, incidentally the year Rock & Roll was born with Bill Hayley and the Comets performing Rock Around the Clock for the first time, This range of fittings are dimensionally similar to pipe to BS3600 and BS EN 10255:2004 (BS1387:1985), both being British Standard dimensions and are available in the simply described ranges of medium and heavy and have a unique range of products known as Branch Bends, we will offer further information on this and this entire product range later in the blog post.
Butt Weld Fittings BS EN 10253 ASME B16.9:2012 Comparison
For the majority of sizes butt weld fitting BS EN 10253 are the same or similar dimensionally to their ASME B16.9:2012 equivalents apart for 65mm (2 ½”) and 150mm (6”) nominal bore. The outside diameter differs between these two sizes making a considerable difference when using welding fittings and flanges. Butt weld fittings BS EN 10253 in 65mm (2 ½”) are 76.1mm outside diameter and in 150mm (6”) 165mm outside diameter.
The equivalent ASME B16.9:2012 in the same sizes are 73mm and 168.3mm outside diameter respectively. There is a smaller difference on 125mm (5”) with butt weld fittings BS EN 10253 being 139.7mm outside diameter and ASME B16.9:2012 at 141.3mm outside diameter. At this point, these dimensional differences apply to British and European Standard flanges including EN 1092-1:2013-04 and BS 10:2009 compared to ASME B16.5:2013.
