Some of the sealants available on our trade counterWhen using BSP stainless steel pipe fittings, it is worth remembering that, firstly these fittings are a taper/parallel thread. The male thread is BSP taper and the female thread is BSP parallel. Secondly, you must remember that stainless is a harder metal than the equivalent fittings in malleable iron or steel. When using the malleable or steel version, the softer metal compresses, creating a better seal.

The same is not true of stainless steel and for this reason, we recommend where it is applicable, the use of hemp spools and a suitable jointing paste. Hemp though cannot be used on potable water systems, but we can offer advice and solutions for most installations. When using a hemp spool, we recommend that a layer of compound is applied to the male thread. The hemp should be then soaked in the compound being used; the soaked hemp should then be applied to the thread. Followed by another layer of the compound, before the joint is completed.

The answer for me is invariably history, which is apt as this year is the 150th anniversary of the birth of the man who discovered stainless steel. Harry Brearley was born on 18th February 1871 in the city of Sheffield, England.  In 1912 while exploring corrosion-resistant alloys to manufacture gun barrels, Harry Brearley discovered stainless Steel, at that time this was named rustless steel. They even attributed her death at a young age to what they called her excesses, including the fork.
