BSP Stainless Steel Pipe Fittings ISO 4144:2003

Stainless steel threaded pipe fittings to ISO 4144

Besseges (Valves, Tubes & Fittings) Ltd has offered BSP stainless steel pipe fittings from stock for thirty years. We carry a wide range of this quality product in stock at our warehouse in Ashton under Lyne. The issue as the writer of our Blogs, is to come up with a piece of writing that people may want to read on the subject of BSP stainless steel pipe fittings. How do you make what is a good product not sound mundane when it is something so commonplace and practical? It is not like you can tell a joke about the stainless fitting that walked into a pub and started a chat; only to realise it had lost the thread of the conversation.

If I had told that joke, it is very unlikely that anyone would read any of my blogs again, how many of you even got to this line? For those that did, thank you for your patience and I hope you find the rest less disappointing. In the main, we are a distributor of Genebre BSP stainless steel pipe fittings and offer a wide range of types and sizes. We carry stock from sizes ⅛” (6mm) to 4” (100mm) nominal bore, for those that do not recognise nominal bore, put simply it is the size not but the exact size. For instance, 1 1/2” (40mm) nominal bore is a 48.3mm OD tube with an ID of around 42mm depending on the wall thickness.

Some of the sealants available on our trade counterWhen using BSP stainless steel pipe fittings, it is worth remembering that, firstly these fittings are a taper/parallel thread. The male thread is BSP taper and the female thread is BSP parallel. Secondly, you must remember that stainless is a harder metal than the equivalent fittings in malleable iron or steel. When using the malleable or steel version, the softer metal compresses, creating a better seal.

The same is not true of stainless steel and for this reason, we recommend where it is applicable, the use of hemp spools and a suitable jointing paste. Hemp though cannot be used on potable water systems, but we can offer advice and solutions for most installations. When using a hemp spool, we recommend that a layer of compound is applied to the male thread. The hemp should be then soaked in the compound being used; the soaked hemp should then be applied to the thread. Followed by another layer of the compound, before the joint is completed.

BSP stainless steel pipe fittings can be used on many distribution systems, including low-pressure steam, compressed air systems, process water, starch and many more. I feel at this point in the writing of this piece that we have returned to mundanity. Even though an explanation of what is possible with this product is required, what is needed is a change in direction.

The answer for me is invariably history, which is apt as this year is the 150th anniversary of the birth of the man who discovered stainless steel. Harry Brearley was born on 18th February 1871 in the city of Sheffield, England.  In 1912 while exploring corrosion-resistant alloys to manufacture gun barrels, Harry Brearley discovered stainless Steel, at that time this was named rustless steel. Harry opened the door for the City of Sheffield to become world-renowned as a manufacturer of stainless steel cutlery.

At the same time opening up the possibility for the masses to buy cutlery, as until then it was the well-off that could afford a silver cutlery service. Copper cutlery predates the stainless steel version by around 800 years in Europe, but was unpopular with many people, as it flavoured the food being eaten.

The Venetians were introduced to the fork in the eleventh century, by Theodora Anna Doukaina, but in their view why would you need a fork when you had fingers? They even attributed her death at a young age to what they called her excesses, including the fork. But you have to consider the fact that these same people believed in witchcraft and valued the ducking stool as a way of discovering them.

The accidental discovery of stainless steel changed the world, it is one of the most used metals on the planet. BSP stainless steel pipe fittings are just one product produced from this material.
